Panelists Stress Privacy Protection
TOKYO (Nikkei)--The two-day Global Information Summit ended Tuesday with a declaration that digital ID technologies will play an important role in the realization of a ubiquitous network access society.
This year's meeting, held at Tokyo International Forum with the sponsorship of Nihon Keizai Shimbun Inc., mainly covered privacy protection and improvements brought on by technological innovations such as smart tags.
During a panel discussion entitled "Vision and Issues of the Digital ID Society" on the second day of the conference, NTT Data Corp. President Tomokazu Hamaguchi said that awareness of the importance of privacy protection and data security is still not high in Japan.
In the same talk, Marc Rotenberg, president of the Electronic Privacy Information Center of the U.S., stressed the need to urgently draw up rules on the handling of private information.
Susumu Furukawa of Microsoft Corp., another participant in the discussion, said that clear rules about who can access how much information must be established if new services utilizing digital ID technologies are to become widely accepted.
