Dr. Thomas Malone

Dr. Thomas Malone
Professor, MIT Sloan School of Management

One of the two founding co-directors of MIT's Initiative on "Inventing the Organizations of the 21st Century," Thomas Malone is a visionary proponent of new organizational designs that take maximum advantage of information technology's expanding possibilities.
For two decades, Malone has consistently led the field in exploring how the organizations of the future will be structured. His book, The Future of Work: How the New Order of Business Will Shape Your Organization, Your Management Style, and Your Life, foresees a workplace revolution that will dramatically change organizational structures and the roles that employees will play in them, and provides the first credible model for actually designing the company of the future. Thomas Malone is Patrick J. McGovern Professor of Information Systems, MIT Sloan School of Management and founder and Director of the MIT Center for Coordination Science.
Based on twenty years of groundbreaking research, The Future of Work proposes that current notions about decentralization merely scratch the surface of what will be possible as technological and economic forces make "command and control" management less useful. In its place will be a more flexible "coordinate and cultivate" approach that will spawn new types of decentralized organizations, from internal markets to democracies to loose hierarchies. These future structures will reap the scale and knowledge efficiencies of large organizations while enabling the freedom, flexibility, and human values that drive smaller firms. Professor Malone goes beyond issues of architecture to define the skills managers will need in a workplace in which everyone shares the power to decide.
This optimistic book shows how we can help create a world that is not just richer, but better. Professor Malone has a long record of anticipating trends in the structure of work. In the mid-1980s, he predicted many of the major developments that drove change in the 90s: electronic markets, outsourcing and the use of intelligent agents for commerce. More recently, he's outlined the emergence of the "e-lance economy." Malone has co-founded three software companies and was a former research scientist at Xerox Palo Alto Research Center. An inventor with ten patents, Professor Malone has published over fifty articles, research papers and book chapters. He's edited three books, including Inventing the Organizations of the 21st Century.

Miss Seija Kulkki

Dr. Seija Kulkki
Director, Center for Knowledge and Innovation Research (CKIR),
Helsinki School of Economics

Dr. Seija Kulkki is the director of Center for Knowledge and Innovation Research (CKIR) at Helsinki School of Economics. CKIR conducts research on renewal and growth of companies and societies based on knowledge and innovation both locally and globally. CKIR is connected to other famous knowledge-related research centers around the world. Professor Ikujiro Nonaka from Hitotsubashi University in Tokyo, Japan is the Visiting Dean at CKIR, Professor Yves Doz from INSEAD in France and Dr C. Otto Scharmer from MIT in United States hold positions as Visiting Professors, and Emeritus Professor James G. March as an Advisory Board Member.

Dr. Kulkki conducts research on multi-located R&D activities of globally operating firms as a part of a larger international research project with researchers from Hitotsubashi, INSEAD and MIT. The focus of the research is the operating and management models that are necessary for managing the global and multi-located knowledge creation in multinational firms. The project brings together Finnish, European, Japanese and American companies.

Dr. Kulkki's article (2001) together with Dr. Mikko Kosonen, Senior Vice President of Nokia Group describes the path of Nokia from a locally diversified to a globally focused, high-performance telecommunications firm. The transformation of Nokia is discussed as a process of renewal where the focus has been placed on the dynamism of individual and organizational tacit knowledge. The article discusses the future-oriented nature of tacit knowledge that explains the company's ability to create new markets and to renew and grow. Article discusses also the effects of globalization on the organizing and managing of Nokia's international research and development operations.

Dr. Kulkki has also published a conceptual article on knowledge creation in global firms (Oxford University Press, 2002) that concerns the creative and integrative capability of a firm to synthesize the local knowledge of customer and market behavior from all over the world with a globally distributed technological competence. During 2004 Oxford University Press will publish a book on management and organization of knowledge-based firms. In the book Dr. Kulkki and Professor Nonaka discuss knowledge, knowledge creation and learning theories as the basis for further development of knowledge-based theory of a firm.

Dr. Kulkki defended her doctoral thesis in Helsinki School of Economics in 1996. Her dissertation concerns knowledge creation in multinational companies. The dissertation develops further the theory of organizational knowledge creation built up by professors Nonaka and Takeuchi in 1995, from the multinational company's point of view. Professor Nonaka also acted as her opponent. The dissertation discusses knowledge creation as a dynamic interaction of individuals, organizations and environment. New organizational knowledge emerges out of shared experiences, especially in demanding situations of problem solving and discontinuity.

During 1997-2000 Dr. Kulkki has been a visiting researcher in INSEAD, France; in the Institute of Innovation Research (IIR), in Hitotsubashi University in Tokyo; as well as in Scancor (Scandinavian Consortium for Organizational Research) in Stanford University, USA.
